What is onychomycosis?

Onychomycosis is a non-life threatening infection of the nails caused predominantly by the

dermatophytes Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum,

and to a lesser extent by yeasts (e.g., Candida species) and non-dermatophytic molds.

Although visual changes are often observed in the nail, a proper diagnosis using a test designed to detect the

presence of nail fungus is often performed to rule out other causes for the nail’s changed appearance.

The worldwide prevalence of onychomycosis is up to 5%, and the risk of infection increases

with age. Treatment options include topical antifungal medications, nail removal, oral antifungal

medications, and lasers.

The choice of therapy depends on the disease severity, previous treatments,

other medications the patient is taking, physician or patient preference, and cost.

With rising patient awareness, the global market for treatment of onychomycosis is increasing and in 2010 was estimated to be $3.6 billion (Podiatry Today).

Surgery to Remove Plantar Warts

Laser Surgery: In this surgical method, the wart is burned using a strong and focused beam of light. It is a surgical method that guarantees less scars on the skin after treatment. You may have to pay a few visits to the clinic. The pain after the treatment is almost negligible but you may feel some amount of redness or swelling on the skin for a few days.

Electro Surgery: This method involves burning of the wart with the use of electric current. For this process, you may have to pay frequent visits to the clinic depending on the size of the wart. Smaller the size, lesser the visits. This method too is known to leave less and mild scars after the treatment. The pain subsides after some time.

Curettage: This method involves, cutting the wart with a sterilized sharp knife. Plantar Warts

What is the plantar warts?

The common wart is known as verruca vulgaris. They are caused by a viral infection of the skin. This occurs as a result of direct contact with the virus. They do not spread through the blood stream. When they occur on the bottom of the foot, they are called plantar warts.

Treatment

There are a variety of ways to treat warts. Professional treatment consists of burning the wart with topical acids, freezing with liquid nitrogen, laser surgery or cutting them out. All methods have the possibility of the wart coming back. Surgical excision of the wart has the highest success rate with a relatively low rate of recurrence. There is some mild discomfort with this procedure and it takes several weeks for the area to completely heal. Normal activity can generally be resumed in a few days depending on the size and number of warts that have been removed.

Freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen is another form of treatment. This form of treatment when the warts are on the bottom of the foot can be very painful and take several days or weeks to heal.

Topical acids can also be a useful means of treating warts. The advantage to this form of treatment is the fact that they are nearly painless and there is no restriction of activity. The down side to this form of treatment is that it frequently requires several treatments and the failure rate is higher than surgical excision of the wart.
