How Leg Vein Therapy Works

Spider veins are caused by a venous insufficiency syndrome, which allows blood in the veins to escape from normal blood flow. In women, the appearance of spider veins can be linked to such factors as heredity, weight gain, hormonal changes and prolonged sitting or standing. While mild forms are viewed as a cosmetic problem, spider veins are bothersome and can cause minor aching, burning and swelling.

The laser treatments involve a laser light that is directed through the skin into the vein by the Gemini laser. The heat causes the vein wall to collapse, seal shut, and then be absorbed by the body.

The Procedure: Laser Treatment

The laser treatment usually takes approximately 30 minutes; however, it may vary depending on the size of the treatment area. While each patient’s discomfort level varies depending on the size and location of the vein, an anesthetic cream is used to minimize any pain.

What to Expect

After the laser treatment, swelling and tenderness may occur for a day or two, but there is no recovery time for laser therapy. A red mark that resembles a scratch may appear near the treated area, but usually fades within a month. This procedure generally requires one to three treatments, which may be performed every eight weeks.
