KTP Laser for Acne Scars

If you have acne scars, you’re well aware of how crippling they can be to your appearance. The good news is, you do not need to live with acne scars. With the proper laser acne scar treatment, you can enjoy radical clearance and a scar-free complexion. There are different types of lasers that work for each various acne scar. For redness due to acne scars, the KTP laser is one of the top in-office acne scar treatment options.

How is the KTP Laser for Acne Scars Different?

Short for potassium titanyl-phosphate, the KTP laser targets many conditions that cause redness on the face, including rosacea, blood vessels and post-inflammatory erythema (the red marks left on the skin after acne lesions disappear). At Schweiger Dermatology, we advise our patients with deep, pitted acne scars to seek out a different laser treatment, such as Fraxel or another fractional CO2 laser. The KTP laser zaps the hemoglobin spots on the face, causing the blood vessels creating that red appearance to collapse.

What to Expect During KTP Laser Treatment for Acne Scars

When you arrive for your KTP laser treatment, your face will be cleansed and gel will get applied to the area of treatment. There is no need for a numbing cream, as the KTP laser for acne scar treatment is not painful. The laser will then treat the targeted areas. The entire KTP treatment takes only minutes, making it a great acne scar option for those with limited time. There is no downtime with the KTP laser and you can immediately resume normal activities or head back to work. Depending on your skin and acne marks, you may need an additional treatment. Some of our patients see significant improvement in their red marks after only one treatment, while others may need an additional one to two sessions with the KTP laser.

532nm Diode Laser VS 585nm Pulsed-Dye Laser

Multiple studies have shown the 532-nm diode (DPFD Nd:YAG) laser to be effective in treating facialtelangiectasia.6,11–13 Cassuto et al11 showed that 93% ofpatients (62 of 66) obtained 75–100% clearance. Theremaining 4 of 66 had 50–75% clearance, but weresatisfied. Hevia14 compared the 532-nm diode (DP FDNd:YAG) laser with the 585-nm flashlamp-pumped,pulsed-dye laser and found no significant clinical differencesin the treatment of facial telangiectasia, buthe did report statistical differences between the 2 lasers.Patients reported a significantly greater degree ofswelling, bruising, pain, and redness after the flashlamp-pumped, pulsed-dye laser. Hevia concluded thatthe 532-nm diode (DP FD Nd:YAG) laser appeared tobe the optimal choice for the treatment of facial telangiectasiabecause of its effectiveness combined withpatient comfort. This study was well constructed, butwith a small sample size (N 5 15 patients). No permanentpathologic skin changes were noted.

532-nm Diode Laser for the Treatment of Facial Telangiectasia and Pigmented Lesions

532-nm diode lasers are lightweight, extremely portable systems that are effective in the treatment of facial telangiectasia and various pigmented lesions. When compared to other popular modalities and laser wavelengths,
the 532-nm diode laser can successfully treat facial telangiectasia
and some pigmented facial lesions with less chance of collateral tissue damage and resultant complications.

The 532-nm diode laser is representative of technological innovations that enable small, lightweight, and affordable lasers to be used by the office-based cosmetic
surgeon. Distinct advantages are evident when it is compared with other wavelength lasers. Because of the smaller spot size and depth of penetration, this laser also has treatment limitations; however, it provides a welcomed addition to the armamentarium for the surgeon treating facial ectatic
and pigmented lesions.

Because of its demonstrated clinical effectiveness, ease of use, and lack of resultant purpura, as well as affordability and portability, this laser is well suited for the office-based cosmetic practice.
